Ein Teilmengensystem ${\displaystyle {}{\mathcal {A}}}$ auf einer Menge ${\displaystyle {}M}$ heißt ${\displaystyle {}\sigma }$-Algebra, wenn folgende Bedingungen erfüllt sind.

1. Es ist ${\displaystyle {}M\in {\mathcal {A}}}$.
2. Mit ${\displaystyle {}T\in {\mathcal {A}}}$ gehört auch das Komplement ${\displaystyle {}M\setminus T}$ zu ${\displaystyle {}{\mathcal {A}}}$.
3. Für jede abzählbare Familie ${\displaystyle {}T_{i}\in {\mathcal {A}}}$, ${\displaystyle {}i\in I}$, ist auch

   ${\displaystyle \bigcup _{i\in I}T_{i}\in {\mathcal {A}}.}$
