Sei ${\displaystyle {}(G,e,\circ )}$ eine Gruppe. Eine Teilmenge ${\displaystyle {}H\subseteq G}$ heißt Untergruppe von ${\displaystyle {}G}$ wenn folgendes gilt.

1. ${\displaystyle {}e\in H}$.
2. Mit ${\displaystyle {}g,h\in H}$ ist auch ${\displaystyle {}g\circ h\in H}$.
3. Mit ${\displaystyle {}g\in H}$ ist auch ${\displaystyle {}g^{-1}\in H}$.
