XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, zu deutsch erweiterbares Benachrichtigungs- und Präsenzprotokoll) ist der Internetstandard für Instant Messaging und bildet die Basis von Jabber. Es ist ein Kommunikationsprotokoll, das XML-Anweisungen benutzt.

Ein Beispiel einer typischen Nachrichtenübermittlung:
