Sonny Cunha gilt als Vater des Hapa Haole, einem Genre der Hawaiimusik das sich durch englische Texte und zahlreiche eingestreute hawaiianische Ausdrücke auszeichnet. Hapa Haole heißt soviel wie halb weiß (und halb hawaiianisch).
